Out and About

The surroundings

Explore some of the hundreds of local paths and trails, from gentle strolls up to day long hikes, on foot, horseback or bike. We have maps and suggested itineraries to help you plan your routes. And we can arrange local guides if you prefer.

The Tour de France regularly speeds past Le Colombier en route to Mont Ventoux. ‘For cyclists – this area is the equivalent of St Andrews for golfers.’ Richard, 2009.

If you’re a serious cyclist – it doesn’t get better than this. For the holiday cyclists – it’s just as appealing. We have bikes at the house which you are welcome to borrow, or you can hire racing bikes and mountain bikes at a bike shop just 4km down the road.

The house is a great venue for a mixed party – the cyclists can do their 100km day trips, while the children and the more leisurely members of the party chill out by the pool or explore the local villages and markets. Everyone is happy.

Multi-sports and fitness training

Keep up your multi-sports training. Not all of you will want to run up and down hills as part of your fitness regime – but don’t worry, everyone can find something to do to keep you moving. Check out the rock climbing and alpine Via Ferrata. Go and explore the countryside on quad bikes. Kayak on the river Drome at Saillans. And there’s tennis and horse riding all within a few kilometres of the house. And for swimming – if you can tear yourself away from the pool, you can go and picnic and swim in the fabulous Pas des Ondes, or the quiet rock pools along the Eygues and the Bentrix.

This part of France has many rivers feeding into the Rhône, and a number of them offer you the opportunity to spend a day canoeing a long stretch, where you stop overnight in one of the provided camping spots, or a smaller stretch is perfect for a relaxed day with many breaks for swimming, picnicing and enjoying the sun. Remember to pack sunhats and sunscreen!

Group and individual Iyenga yoga sessions available locally with Jo, either at her yoga studio in les Pilles, 10 minutes walk away. Or she will come to Château Colombier. She also offers Shiatsu massage. Prices and booking details on request.

The Mountains

We are ideally situated for day trips into the mountains, for winter and summer activities. It’s only 1½ hours drive into the Alps to the closest ski resorts, Joup-de-Loup and Super Devoluy, two base camps which serve two sides of the same mountain.

During the summer months you can take a trip up the chair lift to enjoy a walk with wonderful views and refreshing air, or even take a bike up to experience the ride back down. (The summertime chairlifts run Monday – Thursday, July and August only).

The Sea

In under 2 hours drive you can be visiting the Camargue with its nature reserves, white horses and flamingoes – and miles of sand dunes and flat beaches. Or you can visit the Côte Bleue, the rocky coast to the north west of Marseilles, or the famous Calanques and fishing village of Cassis.

Days Out

We have lots of suggestions for you depending on your interests. For example, a gentle 50 minute drive away through vineyards and pretty villages, L’Isle sur la Sorgue is world renowned for its 300 antique shops, and its Sunday flea market (all year round), and specialist antique fairs at Easter and over the August 15th holiday.

Family Activities

There are plenty of family activities to do in the area: canoeing, swimming in water parks, visiting working farms, adventure parks, or just messing about on the rocky river bed of the River Eygues.
